She helped me begin to write CNF as a means to explore what I didn’t know, rather than focus on what I did. I had an excellent professor (shoutout to Jacqueline Doyle - her writing is fantastic!) who led a wonderful workshop aimed at helping newcomers begin writing in the genre. I’ve always enjoyed reading CNF but didn’t start writing in the genre until about 2016. Why do you write/create Creative Non-Fiction? I try to explore these different interpretations and, for better or for worse, consider how anyone involved (myself included) may have reacted differently. When I write creative nonfiction, I’m often thinking about how my perspective of an event is different from those around me. I often think about how disagreements and conflict arise from our inability or unwillingness to understand each other. I think about the feelings or emotions someone else is expressing and consider how my own experience leads me to interpret that. My inspiration comes from little things - seeing a dog play in the grass, or a distressing story in the news - which often leads to ideas I just can’t get out of my head.
